The Fluke thermal imager
works by detecting head from a person or object. It's also called an
infrared camera and its lens will bounce off the waves from infrared
energy into the sensor array. These sensors then convert the energy into
signals which then form the video image. A person who emits heat will
appear as a white image while the immediate surround will look gray.
Can a thermal imager see through walls and clothes?
This is one of the misconceptions about the Fluke or Trotec thermal
imager. The simple answer is no, they can't see through walls nor can
they see through a person's clothes. The lens can't even "see" the
person just like you would in visible light. What is picks up is the
heat signature of the person or object. It's been used in construction
as well as air-conditioning or heating industries because the device can
spot fissures and cracks where warm or cold air can seep through
increasing your energy bill in the process.
In law enforcement,
however, the imager can be used to detect a gun through a person's
clothes because the signature will appear cooler to the camera which may
alert the police about the firearm.
